Development of a Standing up Motion Assistance Tool for Elderly and Disabled People

A handrail is widely applied to assist the standing up motion of elderly and disabled people. We developed the power assisted handrail which aim to synchronize with user's standing up motion. The handrail system consists of a linear actuator, a PC for control. The trajectory of handrail could design which is based on Bezier curve. We had an experiment to confirm the functionality of this system. In this experiment, it was observed that Parkinson subject who could not stand up without handrail motion, he could stand up with handrail motion assistance. The result indicates that this system could be useful for assistance of elderly and disabled people’s standing up motion.
